Mansion Global: Nobu Co-Founder Lists Longtime Malibu Beach House for Nearly $20 Million
Film producer and early investor in the restaurant chain, Meir Teper has owned the three-bedroom home on Carbon Beach for 30 years
Film producer and Nobu co-founder Meir Teper has listed his charming beach house along California’s Pacific Coast Highway, just up the road from the restaurant’s Malibu location, for $19.5 million.
The three-bedroom home is located on Carbon Beach, a sought-after stretch of the Malibu coast that’s home to a collection of entertainment and business moguls, including Oracle founder Larry Ellison, former Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg and Matrix producer Joel Silver.
“You can go up and down the beach and see what billionaires own houses there,” said Stephen Shapiro of Westside Estate Realty, who listed the home this week. “There’s no shortage of them.”
Hidden behind an ivy-covered wall, the A-frame home spans 4,285 square feet, with two levels of glass-enclosed decks overlooking the ocean. The primary suite is on the beach level with its own private deck, alongside a sauna, a steam room and a gym. The upper level is the main floor, with sloped wood-beamed ceiling presiding over a sitting room with Saltillo tile floors.
Teper, an Israeli film producer and businessman, purchased the Malibu home in 1994 for just $2 million—the same year he first invested in Nobu. At the time, Nobu was starting to grow after Robert De Niro partnered with Japanese chef Nobu Matsuhisa to expand his business to New York.
Matsuhisa had opened a Beverly Hills location—then called Matsuhisa—in 1987, which quickly became a celebrity hot spot. De Niro was such a fan, he offered to back the chef’s expansion to New York, and the first Nobu location opened in Tribeca in 1994. Nobu expanded from there, and today it has over 40 locations on five continents, as well as branded hotels and residences.
Nobu Malibu first opened in 2000, relocating to its current PCH outpost in 2012, followed by the opening of a Nobu Ryokan hotel next door in 2017. The location, less than a mile from Teper’s property on land owned by Ellison, continues to draw Hollywood elite.
Teper has no plans to leave Malibu, which is home to him, according to Shapiro. He purchased a much larger, Richard Meier-designed home in the neighborhood in 2021, where he’s been living for the last couple years. “This he’s been using as a rental house,” Shapiro said. “He’s decided that it may be time to sell it.”
The home is also available to rent, starting at $35,000 per month for longer stays. Teper could not immediately be reached for comment.
